We are pleased to share that Simon Burgmans of in2Dredging (i2D) successfully completed Unisearch’s online Expert Witness training course. This highly regarded course equips participants with essential skills for testifying as expert witnesses and enhancing the quality of their expert witness reports. It also fosters the confidence needed to perform effectively in any arbitral or court proceedings. By combining this training with his Expert Determiners Certification from the Resolution Institute, Simon gained a thorough understanding of an expert witness’s obligations. This foundation ensures he is well-prepared when called upon to provide an expert opinion, which can serve as admissible evidence.
Whilst the dredging industry has many practitioners, only a select few have undergone formal expert witness training and certification. Expert witness training equips professionals with the skills to evaluate evidence effectively using appropriate techniques, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
Practical Application of Training
Simon had the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from his training during a recent dispute involving a dredging contractor’s claim for additional compensation.
Engaged by the contractor’s legal team, Simon critically evaluated the views presented in both the Claimant’s and Respondent’s expert reports. He then delivered a structured and well‑informed independent expert opinion that was clear and easy to understand, which remained unchallenged throughout the hearing. His role included conducting a detailed geotechnical analysis and evaluation of the Respondent’s claim for the dredging works’ costs. This work culminated in a comprehensive expert witness report that effectively conveyed complex technical subject matter to the arbitral tribunal.
Simon’s expertise was recently further called upon when he appeared at the tribunal hearing to present his findings. His testimony informed the tribunal by clarifying key dredging-operational issues and providing well-structured insights to support their decision-making process.
