An Interview with Shameeka Nanayakkara
Shameeka’s strong academic and professional journey highlights her dedication to engineering excellence. She completed her engineering degree in China and later pursued a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University, England. During this time, she also gained practical experience at the world’s largest dredging contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). Known for her proactive problem-solving skills and creative approach, Shameeka is set to strengthen i2D’s multidisciplinary team.
What inspired you to join i2D?
Shameeka Nanayakkara: “My fascination with dredging began when I joined CHEC, where I observed dredging operations using a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger. That experience sparked my interest in dredging, igniting a passion to explore its complexities and pursue a career in the field. When the opportunity to join i2D arose, I saw it as the perfect step to advance my career in a field I truly enjoy.”
Can you tell us more about your role at i2D?
“As a dredging engineer, my responsibilities encompass both office-based tasks and on-site support. In the office, I process geotechnical data, develop accurate project estimates, and create high-quality technical and commercial engineering documents. In the field, I monitor performance progress and ensure adherence to proposed methods and permit conditions. It’s a dynamic role, allowing me to combine academic expertise with practical problem-solving to deliver impactful outcomes for i2D’s clients.”
Which project captivated your attention the most since joining i2D?
“One standout project is the pioneering dredging initiative at the Port of Melbourne. It was the first successful application of Water Injection Dredging in Australia to remove sediments around delicate service protection structures. Being part of a company that pushes boundaries with innovative methods is truly inspiring. It challenges me professionally and it excites me to contribute to advanced technologies that make a meaningful impact on the industry.”
What are you looking forward to achieving at i2D?
“It has been exciting collaborating with the i2D team to deliver innovative solutions that exceed our client’s expectations. I am eager to enhance my skills, embrace new challenges, and make a significant contribution to the projects I support.
